GOLF

BISHOP'S Stortford Golf Club moved comfortably into the second round of the 2008 Thornton Cup challenge with victory over Gosfield Lakes.

Stortford ran out 9 to 5 winners, but not before the visitors had administered a scare by taking three of the morning foursome matches to be 3/2 in the lead at lunch.

Captain Gordon Campbell with Dave Rickwood led the field to secure a fine 4/3 win but the next three matches went to Gosfield and it was left to Andy Vincent and 14-year-old Lee Wilson, playing in his Thornton Cup debut, to reduce the deficit.

But the afternoon singles showed Bishop's Stortford in a different light as they won seven matches.

Ryan Higgo played immaculate golf for a 5/4 win. Ben Cooper also won 5/4 and other strong performances came from Andy Vincent (4/3 win) and Andy Chequer and Dave Rickwood (both with 4/2 wins).

Scratch team captain Campbell said: "It was certainly an anxious start to the season but the team settled down well and ultimately delivered a good result."
