STANSTED AIRPORT: Thumb print scheme hailed a success

THE theft of 18 Mercedes cars and similar upmarket makes from vehicle hirers at Stansted Airport led to the introduction of a thumb print scheme.

Airport Detective Sergeant Vic Murphy said the thefts happened over a two-week period and the vehicles had subsequently been recovered from the UK and Europe.

"We realised there was a growing trend with false documentation at car hirers and introduced the thumb print scheme. "It stopped overnight," he said.

"National has embraced this initiative and has introduced it countrywide in the UK."

Hirers have their thumb-print put onto the agreement documentation when they hire a car.

Mr Murphy said another aid to anti-terrorism and crime-busting was the airport's new CCTV system.

"It's going to have a massive affect," he said.

Technicians completed the camera installation of the state-of-the-art digital system last Monday and it is expected to be fully operational by July.

Mr Murphy said the system, funded by Stansted Airport, would aid the police's investigative, pro-active and preventative services.

Mark Davidson, of BAA Stansted, said the CCTV covered the whole of the airport and included a number plate recognition system.
