STANSTED AIRPORT: First planned strike called off

THE first of three planned walkouts by staff at Stansted Airport has been averted following secret talks with airport bosses.

The first 24-hour walkout was planned to start at 6am on Monday (January 7) but was called off on New Year's Eve after BAA bosses and union representatives agreed to extend the negotiation period by a further three months.

Unions are warning that the other two planned strikes, starting at 6am on Monday, January 14, and a further 48-hour walkout on January 17 will go ahead unless the two can agree over proposed changes to the company Pension scheme.

A spokesman for the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCSU) said negotiations were going well, and confirmed that a draft agreement had been written.

He said: "The negotiating team are now sending that agreement back to its members and we are confident we will reach an agreement soon."

The strikes sparked fears of festive travel chaos as essential safety workers taking to the picket lines would mean the cancellation of all flights.

Both sides are due to meet again for further talks on Friday.
