STANSTED AIRPORT: More talks in bid to avert strikes

A SECOND day of talks aimed at averting a series of New Year strikes at Stansted Airport will take place in a secret location today.

Following the breakdown of talks held last week airport bosses will be meeting with union representatives to try to end the threat of strikes, which would see all seven of BAA's British airports come to a standstill.

Workers at Stansted Airport are threatening to strike following proposed changes to their pension scheme.

The strikes, due to begin with a 24-hour walkout at 6am on Monday (January 7), followed by a further 24-hour strike on January 14, and a 48-hour walkout from 6am on January 17.

The two sides met for hours on December 27 but were both forced to walk away empty-handed when talks broke down.

Unite national civil aviation secretary Brendan Gold said that while workers had decided not to cause disruption by striking over Christmas, they were determined to keep their current pension scheme safe for the future and new workers.
