STANSTED AIRPORT: Strike talks break down
NEW Year travel chaos is looming after talks between staff and bosses aimed at averting strikes at Stansted Airport broke down yesterday.
UNITE members met BAA's Spanish owner Ferrovial to try to come to a last-ditch agreement over the walkouts, but ended up without an solution after several hours of talks.
Workers at Stansted are threatening the strikes over proposed changes to their pension scheme, including the closure of the scheme to new members of staff, seen by many staff as an attempt to close the scheme down completely.
No further talks have been scheduled with UNITE confirming that staff will stage two 24-hour walkouts from 6am on January 7 and 14 withda further 48-hour strike on January 17.
A union spokesman said BAA had refused to back down over the proposed changes and that airports would be shut because some of those striking were vital to passenger safety.
BAA said it was "disappointed" with the collapse of the talks. A spokesman said that although talks had broken down it would still try to find a solution before the strikes were due to take place.
