THE first phase of the new £50m terminal expansion has opened at Stansted Airport – and despite a small teething problem appears to be a success.
Phase one of the scheme – launched on Tuesday, July 1 – saw a 6,000sq.m extension which will supply travellers with a sixth baggage reclaim and an extra immigration desk controlled by the UK Border Agency.
There was a slight hitch to the proceedings when a transit train system malfunctioned – stranding some transit trains and causing delays for 150 passengers at the terminal.
According to an airport spokesman a system “tripped out” shortly before the new extension was due to be opened, delaying 14 flights.
He added the problem had since been fixed and it was now business as usual.
The new carbon-neutral extension was partially funded by DEFRA whivh awarded BAA £250,000 under its bio-energy capital grants scheme to build the new eco friendly facilities.
Stansted Airport strategy director Nick Barton said he had “enormous pride” that the project was already ahead of schedule.
He said: “This is a great day for Stansted. It’s a big statement of confidence in our future, and as passengers begin to experience the new space and facilities we get on with the job of delivering the next phases of the project, ready to be fully open before Christmas.”
The later stages – due to be opened in December – will include new shopping facilities and refurbished waiting areas.
