Local music scene round-up

3:56pm Thursday 23rd October 2008

ONE of the most successful local unsigned bands knocking around at the moment are Wanstead rock stars Slummin’ Angels.

The young trio have just signed a deal with a top music manager, had their song Weirdo named Radio One’s demo of the week, and also came a narrow second in the Standard’s recent Battle of the Bands Competition, beating off 300 other acts in the process. And next Wednesday night (October 29), they play one of their most high-profile gigs yet - at Punk on Soho’s aptly named Soho Street.

Expect a mix of energetic punky spunk, with the odd bout of soothing gentle melodies as well. So if you love local rocked-up goodness, get on down there. Doors open at 8pm.

Tomorrow (Friday October 24) at Walthamstow’s Standard, tribute tunesters Deeply Purple play a headline set. Tickets cost £9.

While on Saturday (October 25), UB4T also bash out some cover hits. Entrance is also £9.

If you prefer something a bit more ROCK! then head on down to the Dukes Head pub on Walthamstow’s Wood Street this Saturday. Rock covers band Anthem play a headline set from 9.30pm.

Expect a storming selection of classic rock tunes from the likes of Bon Jovi, Nirvana, the Darkness and Metallica, with a hint of indie from the likes of the Kaiser Chiefs also thrown in for good measure.

But if you like things a bit more mellow and acoustic, on Sunday (October 26), Walthamstow Folk hosts the acclaimed Martin Simpson at the Plough Inn in Wood Street.

Admission is £6 (concessions £5) and it all starts at 7.30pm. Advance tickets are available and there is standing room only.

Next Wednesday (October 29) at the Sheepwalk in Leytonstone, What’s Cookin present guitar-toting troubadour Andy White.

His colourful career has included a stint alongside Tim Finn as one third of folk super trio ALT, appearances at WOMAD festivals all around the world, collaborations and tours with the great and good of the Irish music scene such as Van Morrison, Sinead O’Connor and Donal Lunny, and winning the prestigious Hot Press Irish Songwriter of the Year award. He’ll be joined by his three-piece band. Support comes from roots duo The Hi and Lo from Leicester.

Doors open at 8.30pm.

And at the Square in Harlow, Saturday sees a headline show from Random Hand, supported by Mike TV and Reederz. Doors open at 8pm.
