Fresh developments in the local music scene

There are fresh developments in the world of local music this week, with a promising new night in Leytonstone.

The North Star pub, on Browning Road just off the High Road, will now be hosting a special monthly acoustic night for local groups, on the third Sunday of every month in their beer garden.

Organised by the Sheepwalk’s favourite promoters, the What’s Cookin group, the debut show is this Sunday (September 21) between 4pm and 7.30pm.

Headliners are bluegrassing musical magicians The Coal Porters, supported by Dan Raza and Quiet Loner.

There’s even rumours of a BBQ... And don’t be put off if it rains - the pub has said it will let groups come in and finish off their shows indoors.

Meanwhile at What’s Cookin’s traditional night at Leytonstone’s Sheepwalk, Tommy Womack, dubbed as a “hillbilly Woody Allen” by American Songwriter magazine, flies in from Nashville, Tennessee, to headline the venue’s Saturday night show (September 20).

Support comes from Dawson Smith and The Dissenters and punk-folk duo Pascal Briggs and Smail Shock.

Meanwhile at the Standard a new local musical champion is set to be crowned on Friday September 19, with the grand final of the venue’s unsigned band competition. Entry is £6.

But if you can’t wait till then for some unsigned majesty, on Thursday September 18 the Royal Zen Society and Pocket Rocket grab the mics and dole out some rock. On Thursday September 18 at the Plough on Walthamstow’s Wood Street Graham Larkbey and the Escape Committee perform a free show, with support from The New Giants and Lizzie B.

Doors open at 8pm for an 8.30pm start.

While at Harlow’s Square on Friday, Rotating Leslie headline supported by Pennyroyal, Cut Cut Shape and Grace Emilys.

On Saturday night Bushnut rock out with a headline set, supported by Damaged Gods and Raygun Royale DJ's.

And on Sunday the venue hosts a Blues Jam night. Entry is free, and backline is provided.

At all of the Square’s nights, doors open at 8pm, and entry is restricted to those aged 16 or over. I.D. may be required to prove your age.

And finally, if good music is not your thing, you can always check out the truly awful Canadian rock band Nickleback who play the Dockland’s O2 Arena on Friday September 20. More tickets have just been released due to extra demand, so I guess there must be some people out there who like them.
