Q. Where can I find one of those old-fashioned kitchen towels on a roller? Are they still made?

A. Yes, have a look at the website of Period Features (periodfeatures.net) They have a simple utilitarian roller towel holder in oak which can be screwed on to the wall – it costs £24. They also supply the cotton/linen mix towels that fit on to it; they are £9.50 each and are made in one of the last few remaining towel mills in the UK. Tel: 01538 372202

Q. I am looking for a chest with a padded fabric-covered top that can be used as a filing cabinet. It would be a piece of furniture that wouldn’t look like a filing cabinet and could sit in a living room. Thank you for your help !

A. There’s a company called Clock House Furniture which manufactures a ‘storage ottoman’ to any size. It can be made to store filing rails, arch files or other stationery. They also do an ‘ottoman chest’ with a drawer on one or both sides. Tel 01620-860968 or clockhouse-furniture.co.uk

Q. I have a parquet floor originally laid into bitumen on concrete.  2 square yards now need to be replaced. What adhesive is compatible? Or should I use a cold bitumen and if so who makes this?

A. We have spoken to Posners, The Floor Store. They supply and lay parquet floors. According to Posners, bitumen is no longer used as an adhesive.

To do the job properly, they suggest the entire floor is lifted, then screeded over the residue. They use an adhesive called Silovil, a two- part component, but there are many on the market. posnersfloorstore.co.uk. You might also try calling Travis Perkins, the builders' merchants, for their advice (head office is on 01604 752424 or find the nearest branch on travisperkins.co.uk
