The House Directory Q&A, November 20 Q. I am looking for a fairly contemporary coat/hat stand for a hallway with limited space in a corner. Any ideas?

A. Chaplins has one of Europe's largest showrooms (over 25,000 sq feet ) for modern furniture and design and over eighty leading manufacturers on display. Look up their website www.chaplins.co.uk , and do a search for ‘coat stands’, then press enter on your keyboard - an excellent selection of modern coat stands and hooks will appear.

Q.How do I find an external straight flight metal staircase for a city basement?

A. Staircases always have to be made to specification so that the correct height of riser and tread is specified for the precise size of the staircase. Try Miller Metalworks who design, manufacture and install both traditional and modern staircases and can also match period designs. Tel: 01245 380858 www.millermetalworks.co.uk

Q.We are looking for a floor paint that can withstand a lot of wear - particularly from office chairs on wheels. Is there anything that will take this sort of abuse?

A. You don't mention the type of floor you wish to paint. Normally you could paint concrete or wooden floors with one of the following brands: Beckers (excellent range of floor paint from Scandinavia) available from specialist decorators’suppliers Ray Munn on 020-7736 9876 www.raymunn.com; Dulux (their trade FloorShield paint can withstand fork-lift trucks) www.dulux.co.uk; Farrow & Ball (they use the floor paint in their own warehouse) www.farrow-ball.com.

Unless the paint is tested in a particular environment there is no guarantee that it will take the wear, but all the floor paints from the above companies will withstand a lot of wear & tear!

This invaluable online directory features a large database of more than 3,500 companies covering all aspects of interior and garden design and decoration. It’s the essential resource both for professionals and for the general public.
