THE Green Street area of Upton Park got a tidy up when members of the area's community forum took to the streets for Operation Clean Sweep.
Close to 50 people turned up to remove litter in the walkabout, which saw more than 70 bags of litter and 78 further bags of recyclable materials gathered as well as fridges, televisions, chairs and even two cuddly toys.
Participants later created a mural of recycled goods that were garnered. It was moulded in the shape of Newham's ribbon logo.
Cllr Harvinder Singh Virdee, chairman of the forum's steering group, said: "It was wonderful to have the support of local residents because they are the one's who know the hot spots for litter and fly-tipping best."
Among the clean up team were children from Elmhurst School and St Angela's School. Representatives from St Antony's Road Seventh Day Adventist Church, local councillors, East Ham MP Steven Timms and Green Street Community Forum members also attended.
Abigail Fordjour, 15, said: "There is a lot of litter in the area and this was a fantastic opportunity to change things."
After the hard work was done, Green Street Community Forum hosted a party where Cllr Virdee thanked the participants for all their hard work. For more information about community forums, contact the freephone number on 0800 519 4015.
