Is Dawson's future at Spurs in jeopardy?

1:05pm Tuesday 22nd April 2008

MICHAEL Dawson looks set to face a fight for his Tottenham place after it was revealed the club is looking to sign two defenders, writes James Randall.

Chelsea's Tal Ben Haim and Getafe centre half Daniel Diaz are both said to be summer targets of Spurs boss Juande Ramos.

The signing of the pair - coupled with the favoured partnership of Ledley King and Jonathan Woodgate - could push Dawson (pictured) down to fourth choice centre back at the club.

And that could prove costly to the 24-year-old as he looks to break into the England squad.

A £3 million bid for 29-year-old Diaz, in particular, looks likely after the player failed to deny the rumours.

"I am comfortable at Getafe but you always want to improve as a player so I hope I will be given the chance," he told the Daily Mail.

"I know that Tottenham have asked for me and there are other foreign clubs interested but this depends on many things, so I will not get carried away."

The signing of Tal Ben Haim is another strong possibility since the defender is out of favour with Blues boss Avram Grant.

The player was quoted last week as saying he would not have signed for the west London club had he known that then-technical director Grant was to become the manager.

The 26-year-old ex-Bolton star has only played 17 times since joining Chelsea under Joes Mourinho's management.
