LEVENTHORPE School, Sawbridgeworth, has inst-alled a wind turbine which is now making green energy and is expected to produce up to 14,000kWh of electricity each year.
Parliamentary under-secretary of state at the Department of Trade and Industry Lord Peter Truscott, who attended the launch of the turbine, said: "We all need to be more efficient with the energy we use and cutting our carbon will also cut costs.
"This wind turbine saves the school £1,200 a year and produces enough electricity for three family homes."
Pupils, parents and the local community can now access information on the turbine's performance via a monitoring system linked to the school's website. It shows how much energy is being generated at any particular moment and how much has been generated to date.
In the first month 402 kilowatt-hours of energy were generated - enough to toast 24,371 pieces of bread.
The school hopes to install a second turbine in the next academic year and is looking to raise money towards the £20,000 cost.
